  PABA CONFERENCE REPORT

The Book Trade in Africa in the 21 st Century: Status, Challenges and Opportunities.

Held on September 4th-5th 2008 at DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA

Despite the low turn out of expected members, we were privileged to have a good attendance of 25 participants who made the first ever PABA conference a great success.

The official opening ceremony was graced by the Deputy Minister of Education who pledged support for booksellers as important agents in spreading information for educational purposes.

The key note address was presented by Prof. Anaba Alemna the University Librarian and Lecturer at the School of Information Sciences University of Ghana, who proved to be very enthusiastic about bookselling and for this we thank Emmanuel for suggesting the right person. His address: Virtual book trade for the African Book trade, myth or reality was well received by participants.

The IBF secretariat was represented by the Director Ms.Fran Dubruille who made a presentation on: The role of Lobby groups in the book industry, which packed participants with useful skills.

A full report of the proceedings is now available on this website.

Elections could not be held as only two paid up members were present and therefore lack of quorum meant that elections are called off. However, those present resolved that a care taker committee be formed to carry forward PABA agenda until May 2009 when all members are expected to attend the next AGM in Lagos Nigeria and elections held. If they agree to this decision, members must begin to fundraise for this important event well in advance.

The said committee consists of: -

  1. Mr. Hudson Unene – Zambia
  2. Ms. Hobokela Magale – Tanzania
  3. Mr. Gus Lusiiba – Uganda
  4. Mrs. Lily Nyariki – Kenya

During the conference another important decision was made regarding Training needs of African Booksellers. A task force was created consisting of: -

  1. Prof. Anaba Alemna – Ghana
  2. Prof. Ikoja Odongo – Uganda
  3. Ms. Francios Dubruille – IBF Belgium
  4. Mrs. Lily Nyariki – Kenya
  5. Mrs. Emily Kogos – Kenya
  6. Mr. Juma Musakali – Kenya

Suggested terms of reference were as follows: -

  1. To work out modalities of setting up a PABA Training Program that will meet the needs of African booksellers in the short term and long term basis.
  2. Formulate curriculums for all levels of training courses, beginning with refresher, certificate, diploma and degree courses.
  3. Liaise with any interested training institution to seek collaboration in mounting the various courses.
Advise PABA Executive on the best strategy to carry out this assignment and how to implement the training program.
