Professional development
Capacity Building Training Workshops
These workshops are aimed at supporting booksellers in establishing autonomous national booksellers associations (NBAs) in countries where these do no yet exist. Through the workshops a range of technical assistance is provided from drafting a constitution to establishing a programme of member services. Countries that have benefited so far include: Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Nigeria. Advocacy Training Workshops
Workshops to show NBAs how to foster and strengthen relationships with other stakeholders in the book industry, including Governments, have been held in Uganda
and Nigeria.
Bookselling skills and knowledge
A variety of adhoc workshops and seminars have been held over the last eight years to strengthen the capacity of individual booksellers and bookselling businesses by training them in essential book selling skills. Among the topics have been Negotiating with Publishers and Marketing for Booksellers.
Information exchange and trade communication
Through its meetings held throughout Africa and its quarterly newsletter, PABA has provided a platform for African booksellers to talk with one another and share their widely differing experiences. Through such dialogue the work of existing NBAs and individual booksellers is strengthened.
Annual Booksellers Convention
PABA holds an Annual Booksellers’ Convention, open to all booksellers, timed to coincide with one of the leading African book fairs. Events at past conventions have included workshops and open meetings to discuss book trade topics.
Partnership Building
PABA has reached out to those international organizations, which promote book development in Africa and encourage collaboration among key stakeholders in the
book chain.
Cooperating organizations include: African Publishers Network (APNET); Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), particularly ADEA’s Working Group on Books and Learning Materials; Book Aid International; Bellagio Publishing Networks; African Books Collective; Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA);
Prince Claus Fund; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO); The British Council; the International Booksellers Federation (IBF); International Networks for Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) and Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).
PABA representatives have contributed to book industry workshops and seminars at book fairs in Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Abidjan, Nairobi, Uganda, London and New Delhi.
PABA is represented on ADEA’s steering committee and on the Zimbabwe International Book Fair Board of Trustees.
Programme Funding
PABA’s Professional Development Programmes and the Annual Booksellers’ Conventions have been made possible through ADEA’s continuing financial support. |
